When there are competing answers…

When you can’t decide between good choices…

When differences of opinion exist…

Go for the greater good test….

Of the possible scenarios, which has the potential for creating the greater good?

Often when I step back and get a bigger picture…when I force myself to think longer term…the answer becomes clearer.

Have you ever used the greater good test?

I'm sticking with Pro and Con lists for now, but I do a list for each option. For example, my question right now is, "Do I stay or do I go?" So I did a list for staying and a list for going. Good thing for me, in this case, the math seems to be working out in a definite direction… I see the potential for a definite flaw in my system though – haha!

  • I've been doing this for years and calling it "The Regret Test." Man! I thought I had the copyright on that one :)! I ask myself which option I would regret more. Yours has a more positive spin though, so I might have to switch it up :)…

  • Yup! This is what the ideal politicians will be doing to their subjects.

    I love ideas/conversations like this.

Are you advocating a utilitarian philosophy, a la Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill? They were big on the "greater good," etc.

Just curious! You know I love a good philosophical conversation. 🙂
