How I Plan to Spend My Unproductive Day

By January 10, 2009Funny

I decided today was going to be a totally unproductive day. Please keep in mind than I’m a doer by nature, so doing nothing just doesn’t work for my personality.  I posted the concept of being unproductive on Twitter (which automatically updates my Facebook) and got several encouragements to take it easy.  A few of my Twitter friends reminded me about the “Sabbath” part of the 10 Commandments.  Thanks for the conviction there.

Still, I think it’s important to understand that different people relax, unwind, and rest differently. For example, I’m a power nap guy. Give me 15 minutes and I’m good to go for hours.  If Cheryl, on the other hand, decides to take a nap, she’s down for a while.  The same is true of how I would spend my unproductive day and how you would.  Some would choose to play golf, some organize their closets, and some veg on the couch.  The point is we are all designed differently.

Therefore, in preparation for my unproductive day, I decided to make a list of what I will do today:

1.     Answer some early morning emails.

2.     Catch up on my Google Reader.

3.     Organize my calendar for next week.

4.     Read my Bible, 2 Chapters of the book I’m currently reading.  (I missed one chapter yesterday and try to read one chapter every day.), and an article in preparation for a paper due next week.

5.     Write this blog post.

6.     Empty the dishwasher.

7.     Give my dog a bath.

8.     Watch the Titans game.

9.     Enjoy some time with my son at a basketball game tonight.

10.  Take a 15-minute nap.

Amazing!  I feel better already.

Teri, ultimately we are made holy by our faith in Christ alone. Jesus said He was “Lord of the Sabbath”. (Luke 6:5) I think the concept of the Sabbath was to set aside time to make Him Lord and we keep it holy when we use our time to honor Him and make Him Lord.

Was the concept of a Sabbath just to be unproductive? How are we supposed to “keep it holy”?

  • I make the same kind of lists. I think more people need permission to take an ‘unproductive day’….. Often my days of unproductivity spark days of great productivity and creativity. God does great things when we stop ‘working’ and trying so hard. Thanks for the post. I need to remember this.

Love your post! I think the first thing on my list would be: No lists today. Like you say, we are all unique, and everyones list would be different. Enjoy your day!

It cracks me up that you had to make a list of all the things you were going to do to be unproductive. 🙂 I love making lists and making a list simply makes me feel better no matter what is on it. 🙂 Have a great day!
