Would Your Church Accept a Winning Lottery Ticket?

By August 31, 2008Leadership

Would you take this money?

One of the high school students in our church sent me this video link of the church in Long Island that recently had $3 million placed in the offering plate. The only dilemma for some is that the money was actually a winning lottery ticket.

What would you do?

Plus, do you know if anyone in our church has one of these tickets?

    Thanks Tony and Renee.

    I’ll take your money!

My theory. You’ve got to know when to hold them. Know when to fold them. Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count your money when you’re sitting at the table. They’ll be time enough for counting when the deal is done.

OK so really, does the Bible say that ALL gambling is wrong? I thought it was “Don’t do it in excess”, “Don’t make others stumble”, “Don’t waste other people’s money, your life savings”, “Don’t let it become an addiction” etc.

Honestly, we went to Vegas years ago… We took $10 each to do whatever with… we both chose slot machines. The rule was, when that $10 was gone, it was gone. I turned that $10 into over $300, I put my original $10 back into my pocket and continued to play with the rest… and lost it all, but I didn’t waste OUR money… or God’s. If I had kept that $300 and given it to the church, is that wrong? I don’t think so.

I have probably bought 20 lottery tickets since I turned 21… just because I can, and it’s fun. I’ve won a few dollars here and there, and I’m pretty sure I will never win because I can totally see God laughing at me saying, “REALLY?! You don’t manage the money I DO give you all that well, you think I’m going to give you MORE?!” haha But if I do, I promise to give a bunch to the church… and I hope you’ll take it! 🙂

Ooops.. typo. I meant ‘king of the world’ not ‘kind of the tv world’ — but he’s king of that too…

God accepts good people and bad people and that’s good money and bad money included.

Who are we to tell god what money the church will accept? I’d even say if an adult entertainer comes to church and has an overwhelming feeling to give, the church Should accept it
because we are supposed to accept her.

I’m assuming Jesus ate food purchased by sinners when he went and hung out with them, right? Bad money buying food for the king of tv world. I say god doesn’t set limits on what kinda money he takes, neither should the church. That’s just too religious in my book

    Good post ron 🙂
